HALLEY SAT ON HER HORSE, looking out over the prairie. âYouâre right, this view is amazing,â she said. The breeze stirred her hair, which hung loose over her shoulders. She turned her face up to the warm sunlight and breathed in the fresh scent of pine and summer.
On the horse beside her, Colton was looking at her, rather than the view. She could feel the warmth of his gaze, hotter than the sun overhead. Halley smiled to herself, remembering their third date. It had seemed as if it was never going to happen, given the way their other dates had gone.
It had been so clear that Colton wanted to do this right with her. She loved that about him. No more frogs down the neck, but she definitely had his attention.
Theyâd gone to dinner at Northern Lights, the nicest restaurant in Whitehorse, had champagne and candlelight. It wasnât until they were on the way home that they both had started laughing at the same time.
âThat was so not us,â Halley got out between laughs.
âCould it have been more awkward?â Colton agreed. Heâd stopped laughing and had slowed the pickup. âYou and Iââ
âWe donât fit the mold. Pull over.â
He shot her an amused look, then pulled over onto a dirt road, coming to stop on a small rise out of sight of the highway. He put down his window and shut off the engine. No full moon, only a sliver on the horizon and a few scattered stars glittering above them.
âI wanted everything to be perfect our first time,â he said, putting his arm around her.
âIt is perfect,â she whispered and he kissed her.
It had been perfect. Theyâd made love in the cab of his pickupâjust like high school kidsâand when they came up for air, the sky was ablaze with the real Northern Lights.
Theyâd talked and laughed, lying in each otherâs arms, their feet sticking out the open window of the pickup. Thatâs when Halley knew with certainty that this was the man for her.
âColton?â She blinked and saw that Colten had gotten off his horse. He was standing next to hers, holding her reins and looking up at her with such love in his eyes that her heart took off at a gallop.
âDo you know why I brought you up here?â
Her heart raced a little faster. âYou said it was to have the lunch that Emma packed. I love Emmaâs food, so youâd better not be fooling with me.â
He grinned, his brown eyes golden in the sunlight. He had his Stetson pushed back. The man couldnât have been more handsome, nor could she have loved him more than she did at that moment.
* * *
COLTON HAD PROMISED HIMSELF he was going to take it slow, but there was nothing slow about the beat of his heart when he was around this woman. Heâd been drawn to her ever since they were kids. Now theyâd been brought back together and he wasnât going to let anything keep them apart, if he could help it.
