HALLEY SAT ON HER HORSE, looking out over the prairie. “You’re right, this view is amazing,” she said. The breeze stirred her hair, which hung loose over her shoulders. She turned her face up to the warm sunlight and breathed in the fresh scent of pine and summer.

On the horse beside her, Colton was looking at her, rather than the view. She could feel the warmth of his gaze, hotter than the sun overhead. Halley smiled to herself, remembering their third date. It had seemed as if it was never going to happen, given the way their other dates had gone.

It had been so clear that Colton wanted to do this right with her. She loved that about him. No more frogs down the neck, but she definitely had his attention.

They’d gone to dinner at Northern Lights, the nicest restaurant in Whitehorse, had champagne and candlelight. It wasn’t until they were on the way home that they both had started laughing at the same time.

“That was so not us,” Halley got out between laughs.

“Could it have been more awkward?” Colton agreed. He’d stopped laughing and had slowed the pickup. “You and I—”

“We don’t fit the mold. Pull over.”

He shot her an amused look, then pulled over onto a dirt road, coming to stop on a small rise out of sight of the highway. He put down his window and shut off the engine. No full moon, only a sliver on the horizon and a few scattered stars glittering above them.

“I wanted everything to be perfect our first time,” he said, putting his arm around her.

“It is perfect,” she whispered and he kissed her.

It had been perfect. They’d made love in the cab of his pickup—just like high school kids—and when they came up for air, the sky was ablaze with the real Northern Lights.

They’d talked and laughed, lying in each other’s arms, their feet sticking out the open window of the pickup. That’s when Halley knew with certainty that this was the man for her.

“Colton?” She blinked and saw that Colten had gotten off his horse. He was standing next to hers, holding her reins and looking up at her with such love in his eyes that her heart took off at a gallop.

“Do you know why I brought you up here?”

Her heart raced a little faster. “You said it was to have the lunch that Emma packed. I love Emma’s food, so you’d better not be fooling with me.”

He grinned, his brown eyes golden in the sunlight. He had his Stetson pushed back. The man couldn’t have been more handsome, nor could she have loved him more than she did at that moment.

* * *

COLTON HAD PROMISED HIMSELF he was going to take it slow, but there was nothing slow about the beat of his heart when he was around this woman. He’d been drawn to her ever since they were kids. Now they’d been brought back together and he wasn’t going to let anything keep them apart, if he could help it.
